January Roof Checklist
The holidays are over, the Christmas lights are being put away, and winter weather is in full swing. January is one of the coldest months for the vast majority of the country. While in California we are known for our mild weather–some areas still get snow/ice this time of year.
Regardless of the climate, your roof still needs to be checked periodically, and especially seasonally. You may not be expecting 2 ft of snow on your roof, but you might want to make sure your warm air stays in at the very least.
Here are some top winter maintenance tips for your roof to cross off your list:
- Visual Inspection. The crucial first step to any maintenance is to walk around your house and inspect your roof. look for signs of damage, missing shingles. Also, check the flashing around the chimney and for any odd-looking eaves. Don’t forget to inspect your attic as well. Listen out for unusual creaking, be on the lookout for drafts, and any smell of mold.
- Weather Stripping. This ensures your house is draft-free. Weatherstripping can be replaced in a day if need be. So be sure to check all the areas it can be found:
-
- Windows
- Vents And Fans
- Air Conditioners
- Electrical and Gas Lines
- Plumbing Areas
- Doors
-
- Clean out the gutters. Whether it’s clogged with leaves from the fall, branches, debris, or just dirt… it prevents rain and snowmelt from draining properly. That can eventually wear down your weatherproofing and cause serious water damage. Contact us if you need help with this!
- Protect your pipes. Even if you are in an area that doesn’t receive snow, temps can still drop to freezing levels multiple times a year. Make sure they are properly insulated, let your faucets drip at night there are freezing temps, and don’t turn the heat down too much while you’re away.
- Have your roof inspected! If it’s been a few years since you had your roof professionally inspected, now is a great time to have that done. It can make all the difference in saving you thousands down the road if a major problem occurs.
Here’s to the new year, make sure to keep tabs on your roof to prevent any major issues before they start! We look forward to serving you in 2022!
